My thanks to Pebble Stationery Co for sending me The Pocket Tomoe River Notebook for review.
Pebble Stationery Co is an Australian company founded by Lois Ho and Joohn Soh through a mutual love for stationery. Pebble Stationery Co started with a successful Kickstarter campaign back in November 2018. And now their web store is open for orders.
I will be giving away one pack of The Pocket Tomoe River Notebook. See on to see how you could win it.
Ok, first the stats. The Pocket Tomoe River Notebook measures 8.89 x 13.97 cm (3.5 x 5.5 inches), basically Field Notes sized. However, what sets it apart is the paper used. The Pocket is filled with 80 pages of 52gsm Tomoe River Paper. Yes, 80 pages. The more popular Field Notes have only 48 pages. But because of the thinness of Tomoe River paper they are able to keep the notebook to a similar thickness to Field Notes’. Each pack comes with 2 such notebook and it is retailing at USD$9.99 per pack.
Tomoe River paper if you’re not familiar is incredibly fountain pen friendly. Shading and sheen show up on better on it. It handles all my wet nibs easily without feathering or bleed through. However, due to the thinness of the paper it has some show through, this is par for the course for Tomoe River paper.
Physically, the Pocket has a grey, Linen finished cover 350gsm textured exterior. The words “Pebble Stationery Co” is embossed on the lower right corner in an understated manner. The notebook is sewn stitched bound with no exposed stitching on its spine. Inside on the cover, it provides you with space to fill in your name, contact and various other details. Personally, I never use this feature so I left it blank. Then its pages upon pages of Tomoe River paper printed with a 4mm dot grid pattern.
I’m really glad they went with the Field Notes size because I already have cases like the Nock Co Sinclair which already fits this size, so I don’t have to seek another cover to protect my notebook. I love my notebook pristine. I’m not a back pocket carry kind of person. But it held up well being knocked around in my Timbuk2 bag even without a protective case around it. I had been carry it to and from work in a bag with two pen cases, a Traveler’s Notebook and Baron Fig Confidant. And for being the smallest stationery item in my bag, it held its weight.
The paper performed beautifully, the stitching solid and strong. It is a heavy hitter despite its featherweight. And sometimes you just want a small pocket-sized notebook for daily carry when you don’t want to bother with A5 hardcover notebooks. One can always find a use for Pebble Stationery Co’s The Notebook.
Plus, they donate a pencil to a child in need for every pack of The Pocket Tomoe River Notebook sold. What’s not to love?
